Small businesses and locally owned restaurants are what make Huntsville-Huntsville. Challenge your foodie side with this monthly goal list that will increase your knowledge and palate of Huntsville’s local food scene.
The month of OCTOBER challenge includes several restaurants in nearby Madison, a brand new coffee shop inside a beloved brewery in downtown Huntsville and a unique collaboration fun treat to enjoy this month and all fall season long!
All foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle and in true Rocket City Dietitian fashion, this list contains a mix of all types of foods from savory to sweet, health conscious to indulgent because #AllFoodsFit into a healthy lifestyle.

This local German food dive is a neighborhood gem in the Medical District of Huntsville. Small and cozy, this is the place to get fresh comfort food, German style. Schnitzel, spatzel, Kasespatzle, sauerkraut, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, currywurst and an enticing dessert case. Here you can order your draft beer served in a two liter boot perfect for sharing and do not miss the craveable must order creamy cucumber salad with your Chicken Cordon Bleu. Gluten free options available here included gluten free breading options for proteins.

Shop. Savor. Socialize. This downtown urban market is also a butcher, a deli and a bar and restaurant open for brunch, lunch and dinner. Classic breakfasts, salads, shrimp and grits, a Vegan power bowl, burritos, sandwiches and a great Cheeseburger. Try The Standard Cheeseburger this month with house ground chuck, Dijon mayo, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion on a toasted roll.

Known for their filled cruffins (cross between a croissant and a muffin), pastries and specialty lattes, try the savory and craveable Ham and Havarti sandwich served on a housemade croissant for a bite that will send you to the moon and back again for more. This local shop also makes custom cakes and cookie cakes.

Located on the ground floor inside the historic Lowe Mill. This local restaurant serves mediterranean and eastern European cuisine with Romanian Influence. You can order both sweet and savory crepes, pitas wraps, loaded fries and salads. The Dracula crepe has house roasted chicken, spinach, mozzarella, cheddar cheese and a garlic pesto sauce wrapped in a thin wrapped and pan seared crepe. Eat this crepe and walk around and explore local artist shops, galleries and check out the indoor swings on the second floor.

Since 1998 this Five Points coffee house is one of Huntsville’s first local coffee shops that is still around today. Coffee beans, specialty lattes, coffee, espresso, pastries and sandwiches. Each month has a unique monthly theme for the lattes. In October order The Maple. This is a Maple Apple Chai Latte and two dollars from every sale will be donated towards the preservation and restoration of the historic Maple Hill Cemetery.

Texas style BBQ restaurant at Lowe Mill. Order to eat in, to go or around the campus of Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment. The menu rotates and has classic BBQ staples like, pulled pork, slaw, greens, brisket and craveable banana pudding. This month order the brisket and banana pudding and make plans to come back for authentic Texas BBQ. Fun side note, the hand drawn dragon on the sign is Kar.

This culinary stop will transport you to a quaint café in France just minutes from Five Points and Downtown Huntsville. Located in between to Huntsville greats, Preservation Company and Holtz Leather. This French bakery and café serves expertly made croissants, loaves of bread, pastries baguette and coffee. Grab a Kouign-Amann (Queen Ah Mahn) a multi layered flaky dough that is buttery with crystalized butter throughout the stout muffin like stature.

With the location next to Big Spring Park in Huntsville this is a great place to enjoy a family night or date night out in Huntsville. Pizzas, sandwiches, salads and unique gelato flavors too. Black light mini golf is upstairs. Order your favorite pizza combo and a side salad and enjoy this local pizza spot before you grab a gelato and walk around downtown.
